Website Tips 101 - Changes to Google My Business

Posted by Kym Campbell on Wednesday, November 18, 2015

The new Google My Business layout

Well Google™ has done it again...another day, another change. The image above shows how the Google My Business layouts now display the combined listing and map on the left hand side of a Google search, underneath the paid Ad Words at the top. Also, now only 3 business listing results appear for any search, rather than the previous 7 results. It’s a renamed and combined version of Google Places™ and Google+ Local™. This is the fourth name change since April 2010 when it was originally Google Local Business Centre but brings it in line with the recent changes to the Google mobile ranking algorithm.

Benefits of Google My Business:

  • Supported by an App in both the iTunes™ store and Google Play™.
  • Can be operated from a mobile device.
  • Allows for edits and reviews from a mobile device.
  • Allows multiple locations to be serviced via one dashboard.
  • All the old features of photos, videos and maps are all still there.

It's not really a new product, rather a combination of various features from the previous two products as mentioned above. Still, it can and does generate plenty of free traffic, so make sure your company Google My Business listing is comprehensive and complete and that it contains a clickable link to your website.

Changes to Google Mobile Rankings

Posted by Kym Campbell on Thursday, April 09, 2015

It's official, Google is set to introduce a new mobile ranking algorithm that will reward mobile 'friendly' websites. That's the good news. The bad news is that if your website isn't mobile optimised, your website ranking will be 'penalised'.

The changes have a  21 April, 2015 release date of “penalties” on the Google algorithm for websites that are not mobile friendly. These non-mobile friendly sites will drop in rankings as mobile compliance becomes a stronger signal in the organic results.

The time to check your website is mobile optimised is NOW before the new algorithm comes into effect. Goggle has provided a review tool that tells you instantly if your website is mobile friendly (see the above pic) as well as suggested improvements if it isn't. Both tools are no cost to you and you can find them through the link below.

Changes to Privacy Policy Act for Businesses

Posted by Kym Campbell on Monday, February 24, 2014

We're back with an update for WSW readers with regards to upcoming changes to online privacy policy's. From 12 March onwards, new privacy principles regarding the handling of personal information will come into effect. These are called the Australian Privacy Principles (APP's) and will replace the existing National Privacy Principles (NPP's) and apply to Australian organisations and government agencies.

The changes relate to how businesses handle, use, and store personal information and engage in direct marketing and are the largest reforms to privacy law in over a decade. Business owners will need to update their privacy policy on their website or legal documents to ensure they comply with the new changes.

If you need more information, please contact our team and we can point you in the right direction.

For more information on the new changes or to download the APP Fact Sheet, please visit Privacy Fact Sheet 17: Australian Privacy Principles.
